Leonardo da Vinci is often credited with the first conceptual model of what is now called a contact lens. Contact lenses have been in use for decades, but the technology that supports these lenses has been evolving rapidly.
What types of contact lenses are there?
Recent innovations have led to advancements in the technology behind lenses as well as the options available across the world. The choices are vast and with vary increased comfort and ease of use. When it comes to the fundamentals, there are many options available. Contact Lenses can be hard, soft, or somewhere in between. There are further choices relating to how long contact lenses can be worn, the material used in production (hydro-gel/ silicon hydro-gel) and how many uses lenses have. Different options are suitable for different lifestyles, but an ophthalmologist or optometrist can help you make sure you choose the lenses best for your personal lifestyle. There are multiple other factors to consider than simply which style you prefer, so be sure to trust an eye care professional or your nearest qualified optician.
While occasions for use of contacts are mentioned above, there are five types of contact lenses that are most commonly prescribed:
- Gas-permeable contact lenses are best for those who want crisp, sharp vision and are willing to perform the maintenance these lenses require
- Bifocal lenses are good for those with presbyopia
- Toric lenses are meant for those with astigmatism
- Daily disposable lenses are made to be tossed each night, and they require no special cleansers or solutions. They are best for those who know they will not clean their lenses as suggested
- Other types of disposable lenses work in the same way, but they can be worn for a longer duration
